Some stories begin with a meeting. Others start with a name. In the Cerrado, this story involves both! In 2025, our cameras captured a rare event at Parque Nacional Grande Sertão Veredas: a litter of jaguar triplets. According to the study “Unveiling demographic and mating strategies of Panthera onca in the Pantanal, Brazil” published by Onçafari, less than 9% of jaguar litters in the Pantanal are triplets, making this record even more special.
Monitoring these individuals is part of the project “Jaguars: Guardians of the Grande Sertão Veredas”, a continuous wildlife monitoring effort in the Cerrado. This project is carried out by Onçafari with support from Plataforma Semente, an initiative of the Ministério Público de Minas Gerais (MPMG), in partnership with CeMAIS. Through camera traps, it’s possible to follow these top predators over time, recording their movements, behaviors, and the development of the cubs in the landscape, helping to preserve the region.
Giving a name is more than identifying an individual; it’s about creating connection, bringing people closer to conservation, and turning records into narratives that continue over time. Each monitored jaguar carries a unique story and it’s through these names that we will continue tracking their movements and behaviors in the wild.
