Brazilian Solutions for Global Challenges
The Earthshot Prize, created in 2020 by Prince William, is one of the world’s most prestigious environmental awards. Its mission is to identify, support, and celebrate innovations that transform bold ideas into solutions for the place we all call home: planet Earth. The Earthshot Prize highlights the urgency of the major environmental challenges we currently face, such as the climate emergency and biodiversity loss.
Every year, the prize recognizes and accelerates five innovative solutions in the following categories: (1) Protect and restore nature; (2) Clean our air; (3) Revive our oceans; (4) Build a waste-free world; and (5) Fix our climate. In addition to a £1 million financial award (about R$7 million), the winner in each category gains international visibility, expands its partnership networks, and has the opportunity to see its solutions replicated around the world.
Earthshot Prize in Brazil
In 2025, Brazil, the country with the greatest biodiversity on Earth, home to vast cultural richness and to the largest tropical rainforest on the planet, took the spotlight as host of the 5th edition of the prize. The ceremony took place in November at the Museum of Tomorrow (Rio de Janeiro) and was attended by Prince William.
This publication presents a selection of Brazilian initiatives that have been finalists in past editions of the Earthshot Prize, including Onçafari (pages 36 to 39).
The solution “Ecotourism that regenerates wildlife” showcases Onçafari’s mission to create and conserve ecological corridors across different Brazilian biomes and, through ecotourism, protect wildlife and promote the socioeconomic development of local communities. It also tells the story of how Onçafari began, how our conservation model has expanded, and what the main challenges are for consolidating our projects.
Brazil and Environmental Challenges
Brazil has a key role in transforming and tackling the climate crisis due to its ecological importance, cultural diversity shaped by Indigenous peoples and traditional communities, and the multitude of creative solutions that flourish across its vast territory.
For us, it is a great honor to be among the 26 Brazilian examples of innovation nominated for the prize and featured in this publication; solutions that serve as an invitation to take action for our planet. This is yet more recognition of the values of excellence, pioneering spirit, and perseverance that guide our efforts and our commitment to Brazil’s biodiversity.
