Onçafari took part in the launch of MapBiomas Collection 11, which introduced My MapBiomas, a new platform that allows organizations to create customized analyses based on different territorial data. During the demonstration, the team used monitoring data from Simplício, a melanistic jaguar tracked by Onçafari in the region of Grande Sertão Veredas National Park and Pousada Trijunção to show how wildlife information can be cross referenced with data on land use, fire, and vegetation cover.

The analysis revealed changes in the animal's home range; since SimplĂ­cio was born, about 60 thousand hectares of his home range have been converted into soybean farmland. However, the data also showed that the jaguar favors native vegetation for his movements, avoiding the cropland area.
Access to My MapBiomas expands the possibilities for analyzing the data Onçafari collects in the field. The tool creates opportunities to investigate landscape changes, monitor conservation areas and ecological corridors, and connect wildlife data with information on fire, degradation, and land use.

Onçafari published a study in the journal Notas sobre Mamíferos Sudamericanos presenting the first scientific records of melanism in marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus). The records occurred in two biomes: at Caiman Pantanal (MS) in the Pantanal, an adult melanistic female was recorded in February 2021, while in Grande Sertão Veredas National Park (BA/MG) in the Cerrado, at least two melanistic males were identified between 2025 and 2026 through camera traps and direct observations.

Melanism is a genetic condition characterized by excessive melanin production resulting in darker coloration. In addition to documenting this trait, the study raises new questions about the marsh deer population in the Cerrado and suggests that habitat isolation and fragmentation may influence the genetic diversity of small populations. Therefore, continuous monitoring is essential to track these animals and expand our knowledge of the species and the landscapes they inhabit.

Onçafari carried out the release of Guaranå, a puma, at the São Francisco do Perigara Reserve. The male animal rescued in late 2025 during a monitoring activity underwent veterinary care and a period of rehabilitation before returning to the wild. After receiving initial care from the State Secretariat for the Environment (SEMA) in Cuiabå, he was taken to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (CRAS) in Campo Grande where he regained weight and was monitored until he was fit for release.

Guaranå is the first animal rescued and released at the São Francisco do Perigara Reserve in the Pantanal, and now joins the list of animals monitored by Onçafari.

Based on the monitoring data, we will continue tracking his readaptation process and gaining a more precise understanding of how he uses this area.

In August, Onçafari marked 15 years of its journey dedicated to conserving Brazilian biodiversity. What began in 2011 with ecotourism as a tool to bring people closer to nature and demonstrate that a jaguar is worth more alive than dead has grown exponentially over the years. Today the organization is present in four biomes developing initiatives that combine research, environmental education, ecotourism, fire prevention and firefighting, species reintroduction, and partnerships with local communities.

Over these 15 years, we have built a story full of lessons, progress, and achievements. This journey became a reality only because of the continuous support of everyone who joined our cause and helped drive our purpose forward.
