Do You Remember Chico? Chico is a male puma that was found in a sugarcane field in the municipality of Costa Rica, Mato Grosso do Sul. He was without his mother and was approximately five months old at the time. At that age, cubs are still very small and lack the skills needed to survive on their own in the wild. For this reason, he was rescued and after evaluations and veterinary care was transferred to our Wildlife Reintroduction Center at the Santa Sofia Reserve in August 2022.
Chico spent a little more than two years in our facility undergoing various hunting training sessions to stimulate his natural instincts, preparing him to return to a free life in the Pantanal.
Over time, the young male grew and gained weight, and during the long rehabilitation process he began to resemble a truly wild animal. |
| He learned to hide in the forested areas of the enclosure and displayed remarkable skill in hunting live prey.
Before returning to the wild, Chico was fitted with a GPS and VHF monitoring collar. The data from the collar is essential for our team to follow his daily activities and assess how his âreturn homeâ is progressing.
On January 16th, the enclosure door was opened and Chico cautiously stepped out to explore his new surroundings. At night, he returned briefly to the transition area but did not re-enter the enclosure. Based on the collar data, we know he is now exploring new areas and has already managed to feed himself independently. | | | In partnership with C6 Bank, we donated 60 copies of the children's book "AmazĂ´nia das Crianças" (Childenâs Amazon) by nature photographer AraquĂŠm Alcântara to different public schools near our operating bases. In the book, children from six Amazonian states share first-hand accounts of what it's like to live in the world's largest tropical forest, inspired by their daily lives and the stories of the region. The work features photographs by AraquĂŠm, texts by journalist Morris Kachani, and illustrations by artist Angelo Abu.
The book delivery was part of an educational activity aimed at introducing the Amazon to children aged 6 to 12 and helping them recognize and appreciate the biome they live in, drawing parallels with the book "Amazônia das Crianças." After providing a brief context about the Amazon biome, the Onçafari team read some stories from the book and invited the students to share, through texts and drawings, what it is like to be a child in the Cerrado, the Atlantic Forest, and the Pantanal biomes where the participating schools are located. | | Are you an educator interested in bringing "Amazônia das Crianças" to your school? Digital versions in Portuguese and English are available here. | | |

| | The Pantanal Recovery campaign has played a crucial role in the reconstruction of our facilities, the resumption of our operations, and, most importantly, the rescue of surviving animals, including enabling continuous investment in intensive veterinary care. Thanks to the support of various donors, companies, and partner institutions, we are overcoming the losses caused by the fires in the Pantanal. We are committed to transparency and achieving concrete results in all our actions. Therefore, we are sharing with everyone the Financial Report on the Pantanal Recovery campaign, which details the context and extent of the fires at our bases and the costs involved in all stages of our recovery efforts, from fire-fighting, reconstruction, equipment acquisition, and the structuring of the Anti-Fire Front. We appreciate the collaboration and trust you have placed in our work for the conservation of fauna and Brazilian biomes through your support. |
