October began with a significant achievement for conservation, marked by the return of Miranda and Itapira, two jaguars, to the wild. Both were rescued from the Pantanal fires with severe burns on their paws. After intensive treatment and support from partners like NEX, ICMBio, and IMASUL, they successfully recovered and were returned to their natural habitat, where they continue to be monitored by our team. Following the most challenging period in Onçafari's history, seeing these two jaguars back in the wild brings us immense joy and motivates us even more to continue our efforts in nature conservation.

Additionally, we have great news: Onçafari was awarded the Best NGOs 2024 Award, a collective recognition for our team, board, partners, supporters, and everyone who contributes to our mission. In a country with over 800,000 NGOs, being among the top 100 is a significant source of pride and affirms that we are on the right path in conserving biodiversity and fostering the socioeconomic development of the communities we serve.

At the international level, we participated in COP 16 (the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity) in Cali, Colombia, where we presented on the panels “Biodiversity Credits: Ongoing Application Cases and Involved Sectors” and “From the Arrival Point of Conservation Biology: Heart, Corridors, and Carnivores to Coexistence.” This gathering marked an important milestone for biodiversity conservation, promoting discussions on the goals to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.

These achievements and efforts underscore Onçafari's ongoing commitment to conservation and sustainable development. Every action we take, whether through our projects or participation in international events, is a step toward greater protection and appreciation of biodiversity.

Mario Haberfeld, CEO and founder of Onçafari, represented the organization at COP 16 in Colombia, one of the world's most important events for biodiversity conservation. The event brought together leaders from 196 countries, local community representatives, the private sector, NGOs, and other stakeholders to discuss and promote actions for biodiversity conservation.

During the event, Mario participated in the panel “From the Arrival Point of Conservation Biology: Heart, Corridors, and Carnivores to Coexistence,” which focused on the importance of Conservation Units, connectivity between protected areas, and the conservation of large carnivores, particularly jaguars, which play essential ecological roles in their ecosystems. He also joined the panel “Biodiversity Credits: Ongoing Application Cases and Involved Sectors,” discussing the perspectives and motivations of representatives from companies, the financial sector, and governments interested in negotiating biodiversity credits.

Additionally, participation in COP 16 facilitated in-person meetings with representatives from Rainforest Trust and the Rewilding Argentina Foundation, both partners of Onçafari, among many others.

Participating in COP 16 is crucial for addressing challenges and opportunities, as well as establishing strategic collaborations to protect biodiversity and ensure a sustainable future for the ecosystems and communities that depend on them.

The first recorded instance of a jaguar using a giant armadillo burrow as a thermal refuge has been documented.

A study conducted by Onçafari and Projeto Tatu-canastra, part of ICAS, with support from Pousada Trijunção, observed this remarkable behavior for the first time in the Grande Sertão Veredas National Park in the Cerrado.

This discovery underscores the importance of these burrows in mitigating the effects of climate change by creating a milder microclimate and providing shelter for various species. The giant armadillo, known as the "ecological engineer," plays a crucial role in the conservation of the Cerrado and the broader ecosystem.

After the successful release of the jaguar Miranda, it’s now Itapira’s turn to return to the wild!  Itapira is a young jaguar who has been monitored by Onçafari since her birth in 2023. She is one of the survivors of the fire that impacted Caiman, our main base of operations in the Pantanal.
In August, shortly after the fires, she was found trying to shelter in a concrete pipe; she was severely dehydrated and had burns on all four paws.

She was rescued and received immediate care from our team. The young female’s injuries were serious, requiring over 50 days of intensive treatment. Afterward, Itapira made a long journey of approximately 17 hours from Goiás to the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul, her true home. On October 5, she was returned to nature at Caiman, the same place where she was born in 2023 and where she was found after the fires.

Before her release, she was fitted with a GPS radio collar that sends daily location points, allowing us to monitor her return to the wild.
